Dr A. van Veen (Adriejan)

Adriejan van Veen (b. 1984) in 2017 became assistant professor, and in 2018 postdoctoral researcher in Political History at Radboud University Nijmegen. He specializes in the history of the political culture of the Netherlands and Europe in the modern age (c.1780-present). Specifically, he is interested in the history of political and societal organization, and the theory and practice of political representation. He is also interested in the history of the public agenda-setting of (solutions for) social problems.

Van Veen studied History at Utrecht University, where he graduated in the Research Master History: Cities, States and Citizenship in 2009 (with honor). He also studied Political Science at the University of Amsterdam and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2014 he successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation about independent regulatory authorities at the Department of Public Administration of Utrecht University. Afterwards, he was postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the departments of International Studies and History at Leiden University, and the department of History of Utrecht University.

Van Veen published in BMGN- Low Countries Historical Review about representative labour councils around 1900, and in Tijdschrift voor Toezicht about the composition of boards and supervisory councils of independent regulatory authorities. Recently an article about experiments with voter organizations in the Netherlands in 1848 was published in De Moderne Tijd.

His current research concerns the relations between societal and political organizations in the Netherlands in the period 1780-1840; and towards the discourses employed by institutions operating at the interface of the public and the private to legitimize their authority.
