Ultra-Thin Solar Cells

You see them on more and more roofs: solar cells. Dr. Ir. John Schermer has been conducting research on solar cells with his Applied Materials Science group for over 30 years. They have developed ultra-thin solar cells with very high efficiency over the years and have even set multiple world records with them!

In this episode, John explains how such a small research group in Nijmegen has had such a significant impact on the field of solar cells. He talks about how perseverance turned out to be the key to success and explains which new insights and (sometimes accidental) discoveries have led to the current solar cells that they are developing in the lab. Lastly, he indicates where we are most likely to encounter these in the future: in space.
