The use of software in qualitative research is exploding. Yet, quality guidance on how to make meaningful use of tools for qualitative data analysis (QDAS) is still scarce. This course offers a contextualized and comprehensive understanding of NVivo as a leading QDAS tool. You will acquire essential software skills for conducting qualitative research in NVivo, whilst being able to fully take into account all the benefits and limitations of computer-assisted analysis.
Within this course, you will not only have the opportunity to sharpen your technical software knowledge, but also to turn knowledge into tangible skills based on a variety of practical assignments, group activities and exercises based on sample data and individual data from each participant. Morning sessions establish the knowledge basis for data management, coding, analysis, and reporting in an interactive environment. The course is open to researchers at all stages of research. The afternoon sessions will be reserved for practicing the use of NVivo, and you are highly encouraged to use your own qualitative data (interviews, focus groups, documents, social media data etc.) whenever possible. Though, mock data for those in the earliest stages of research will be available for use
After successful completion of this course you will be able to import data into NVivo, set up a project and manage various types of data sources. Furthermore, you will be able to explore data and apply different techniques of coding (incl. auto-coding and AI-assisted coding) suited to different types of data in NVivo, select the appropriate strategy for coding data suited to different disciplinary tradition, understand and apply queries in NVivo to analyze data and seek patterns, and utilize various data visualization tools to present research results effectively.
