Taking exams abroad

Take into account that: 

• Taking an exam when you are abroad is one of the possibilities for passing a course if you are overseas. Arrangements may also be made by your own study programme. Check first with your own study programme to see which agreements have been made before you initiate the procedure below; 
• You may take a maximum of four exams when you are abroad; 
• Exams may only be taken abroad if they start at exactly the same time as the exam at Radboud University;  
• Not all universities facilitate the option of taking an exam on their campus. 

What do you need to do? 

• Check to see whether the exam can be held on the same day and at the same time as the exam in the Netherlands (time differences, public holidays and holidays will also need to be taken into account); 
• Make sure that you have the name of a contact person at the host university. Then check with them to see whether it is possible to take the exam at the partner university and whether this will involve any costs. These costs will be borne by the student and they may be quite substantial. 
• Register for the exam via Osiris.  

If you are able to meet these requirements, please complete this form so that your request can be officially submitted to the International Office Social Sciences (IOSS). This form must be completed no later than six weeks before the exam date.   

Following the request 

After your request has been made, the IOSS will officially submit the request to take the exam abroad to the designated contact person. Discussions will be held with the contact person in order to ensure that everything is arranged properly. And to ensure that the contact person has additional information, such as general instructions for the exam (and technical instructions if needed), the time and date when the exam will be sent and what is expected after the exam has been taken. 

Please note that a great deal of organisation is required to facilitate exams that are taken abroad. This means that this option is not optional. Once everything has been arranged so that you can take an exam abroad, you will also have to sit the exam!

Students who are eligible: 

• Students who are required by their study programme to go abroad in a period during which a first or second exam opportunity is offered. These students have the option of taking the exam abroad, unless an alternative time/format is offered. Please note that this only applies to students who are taking the course for the first time in this current academic year. 
• Incoming exchange students who are only present for the first semester can resit a Block 2 exam at their home university, as long as they attended the first exam opportunity (applies to a maximum of two exams). 

What do you need to do? 

Check with the foreign university to see whether: 

• The exam can be held on the same day and at the same time as the exam in the Netherlands (time differences and public holidays will also need to be taken into account); 
• A room with a stable internet connection is available; 
• In the case of a digital exam, you have access to a suitable device (laptop or desktop PC) with a Chrome browser so that you can sit the exam; 
• An invigilator will be present during the exam. 

If the above requirements can be met, you may register by using the online registration form. This form must be completed no later than fifteen business days before the exam date. Don’t forget to register for the exam via Osiris. 

Following the request 

Following receipt of your registration form, a member of the exam organisation will check to see whether you do in fact belong to one of the above-mentioned groups and will then consult the Examination Board if necessary. Once everything has been approved, the contact person at the foreign university will be contacted to discuss matters such as general examination instructions, technical instructions and the time that the exam will be held. 

Once it is clear that the exam can be arranged, you will be contacted by a member of the exam organisation.
