This unique course will teach you about various aspects of Cardiology & Cardiothoracic Surgery and provide you with clinically oriented lectures and hands-on practical sessions given by some of our finest professors and doctors. The course is designed for (bio)medical students interested in Cardiology or pursuing a research or clinical career within the fields of Cardiology or Cardiothoracic surgery.

    This unique course will teach you about various clinical and research aspects of Cardiology & Cardiothoracic Surgery and provide you with clinically oriented lectures and hands-on practical sessions given by our finest professors and doctors. 

    The lectures will not only provide you with a better understanding of the basics of Cardiology, they will also introduce you to topics and techniques specific to the various sub-specialties of Cardiology, such as echocardiography, interventional cardiology and electrophysiology. We will also be practicing dissection skills and surgical techniques in various practical workshops.

    Course Programme

    • Monday
      On Monday you will kick off with lectures on anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, followed by hands-on porcine heart dissection guided by one of the cardiac surgeons. 
    • Tuesday
      You will start with lectures on three very important diagnostic tools: electrocardiography, coronary angiography and echocardiography. During the afternoon you will practice your echocardiography skills.
    • Wednesday 
      Wednesday is themed around interventions with lectures on percutaneous coronary interventions and coronary artery bypass surgery. In the afternoon you will get to make your own coronary bypass on porcine hearts. This practical session was rated very highly by the participants last year! 
    • Thursday
      In the morning you will focus on the topic of inflammation and the afternoon is dedicated to a fantastic congenital session. This includes a lecture on systematic approaches to diagnosing various congenital anomalies, followed by a practical session in the dissection laboratory. You will get the opportunity to observe and diagnose some very special tiny hearts. 
    • Friday
      On Friday, you will learn about resuscitation with a practical session.

    An Introduction to the Fascinating World of Cardiology

    Prof. dr. Niels van Royen 

    Prof. Niels van Royen is the Head of Cardiology Radboud University Medical Center. He has been appointed Professor of Cardiology at The Radboud University Medical Center with effect from 1 June 2017. 

    Niels van Royen (Amsterdam, 1971) studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam and received his doctorate degree in 1998. In 2003 he obtained - with honors - his PhD on research stimulation of collateral artery formation in the heart. The research was conducted in collaboration with the Max-Planck Institute in Bad Nauheim and the University of Freiburg. Van Royen specialized in Cardiology at the AMC Amsterdam (2003-2008). In 2010 he started as a Cardiologist at the VU medical center. In 2012 he was appointed Professor of Interventional Cardiology. Here he has set up translational research lines focusing on ischemic heart disease and approaches to attenuate the damage on the heart caused by coronary artery disease.

    Admission requirements: We expect participants to have basic knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system as provided by their own medical school. A preparatory assessment will be provided to make up for any knowledge gaps and to recollect previously studied topics.
