Talents are not always visible. Do you want to learn how to see them, and to know how to encourage them, in the people you work with, and maybe in yourself: then you are welcome in this course, where we look beyond borders, borders of countries, but also the borders in our own thinking.

In this course, international experts will challenge you to look beyond the accepted views on giftedness and talent. Models and theories of giftedness and talent will be discussed, with special attention for identification, prevention and intervention, like self-regulated learning, social and emotional development, different forms of enrichment and special classes and programs for gifted and talented students. You will learn from experts and from your fellow international student. And we, the lecturers, will also learn from you. 

  • You are asked to be critical, discussing difficult situations like ‘how do we encourage talent without being elitists?’. 
  • You will be critical of both the way you work, and your own talents and talent development. 
  • You will investigate the conflict between stimulating talent and being fearful of doing so. 
  • Do we want people to excel? 
  • Do we dare excel ourselves? 

Practical strategies will be explored and developed during the course.

Course Programme

Practical strategies will be explored and developed during the course. We will focus on learning and the learner thus moving us beyond issues of identification allowing teachers the opportunity to think about provision and support. And we will talk about mental health issues related to talent. 

After the course, you will go home with a plan or a product, to contribute to talent development in your own work or study environment.

Prof. Dr. Lianne Hoogeveen

Prof. Dr. Lianne Hoogeveen is Professor by special appointment on the topic 'Identification, Support and Counseling of Talent'. She is Program Director of the Radboud International Training of High Ability (RITHA), a post­ academic training at the Radboud Center of Social Sciences, qualified by the European Council for High Ability (ECHA). 

Hoogeveen coordinates the master specialization 'Gifted Education' at Radboud University. As a mental health psychologist, she examines and counsels adolescents and adults with high abilities at CBO Talent Development in Nijmegen. As part of the Behavioral Science Institute (BSI) of the Radboud University, Lianne Hoogeveen is involved in research on giftedness and education (speciality: 'Identification, Support and Counseling of Talent'), cooperating with colleagues of Dutch and international universities. She is a guest lecturer in several European and non-European universities. Since September 2020, she is the President of the European Council for High Ability (ECHA).
