Infrared (IR) free-electron laser (FEL) facilities have increasing impact on research in molecular spectroscopy and material science. The facilities offer their infrastructures to interested external scientists worldwide. Also to you? Get up to date with the latest developments in IR free electron laser technology and especially its applications.

The program will consist of lectures by experts in IR-FEL technology and applications from Radboud University and from the Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin. The program will include a visit to the FELIX free-electron laser and its user stations.

Course Programme

Course topics will be taught in 3.5-hr sessions and will address: 

  • a brief history and the basic operation principles of IR-FELs;
  • modern developments in IR-FEL technology with focus on new applications; Gaussian beam optics, IR materials and techniques;
  • basics on molecular vibrations and IR-spectroscopy; phonons and excitations in solids;
  • experimental techniques for gas phase studies: Action spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and more;
  • applications (gas phase): biological systems, clusters, hydrogen bonded systems, metabolomics, astrophysics;
  • experimental techniques for condensed phase studies; ultrafast pump-probe methods;
  • applications (condensed phase): magnetic switching, exciton dynamics.

The program will include a visit to the FELIX free-electron laser and its user stations.

Admission requirements: At least Bachelor-level degree in chemistry, physics, or equivalent. We expect that participants have followed BSc-level courses in two or more of the following topics: quantum mechanics, chemical bonding, molecular physics, physical chemistry, solid state physics, quantum chemistry, analytical chemistry.
