This course focuses on the use of digital technologies for qualitative data collection, from a conceptual to applied perspective, including logistical, technical and ethical issues. Its purpose is to provide hands-on training on online qualitative data collection methods, covering methodological and practical aspects of online focus groups, online interviewing and virtual ethnography (online fieldwork).

During this course, you will learn about five major topics:

Introduction online qualitative research methods and online data collection
Online focus groups: fundamentals and practice
Online interviewing: fundamentals and practice
Etnography (online fieldwork): fundamentals and practice
Ethical issues

After following this course, you will be able to understand concepts and assumptions of social science methodology using digital technologies, to design a research with online qualitative data collection, to collect qualitative data online, and to address technological and ethical issues using digital technologies.

Introduction online qualitative research methods and online data collection
In the overview and introduction, you will look at the digital technologies as a social science data collection tool and a space for online social formations. The course introduces online qualitative research methods. Furthermore, you will look into various temporal dimensions (synchronous, asynchronous), various platform/app specific formats (text based, audio, video-based), and discuss pros and cons of online data collection in general.
Online focus groups: fundamentals and practice
You will discuss fundamentals of focus groups as a group-dynamic based method. You will learn how to design an online focus group, from selection, recruitment, research design issues, and number of participants to moderation issues and how to effectively prepare question guidelines for online focus group. You will compare various formats of online focus groups (text based, video based) and do a hands-on exercise: conducting online focus groups.
Online interviewing: fundamentals and practice
You will cover fundamentals of qualitative interviewing. You learn how to design online interviews and how to prepare online interview questions. You will tackle critical issues for successful online interviewing: absence of social context cues, building rapport online, how to build and sustain interaction and how to address trust issues online. You look into various formats of online interviewing (text based, video based, one on one, and dyadic, informal, in-depth, expert) and do a hands-on exercise: conducting online qualitative interview.
Etnography (online fieldwork): fundamentals and practice
You will discuss fundamentals of ethnography (online fieldwork). You will learn how to design a study with online fieldwork, discuss various online fields (venues), how to choose sites, temporal dimensions of online fieldwork and participant observation, documenting online, asking questions online, issues of covert/overt online fieldwork. You do a hands-on exercise: conducting online fieldwork.
Ethical issues
You will engage into a critical ethical discussion, tackling key ethical concepts in online research, such as privacy, anonymity, confidentiality, data security, withdrawal, debriefing, informed consent.

Online Course

This is an online course, which means that unfortunately the social activities of the Radboud Summer School do not apply to this course. In addition, the program will also differ from the weekly schedule published on the website.

Two weeks before the course starts you will be added to our online learning environment Brightspace, where the new times will be communicated.

Bojana Lobe

Dr. Bojana Lobe is senior lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana (UL), where she teaches a number of methodological courses (statistics, questionnaire design, qualitative methods, comparative research, digital technologies and data collection). She has written the book Integration of Online Research Methods. She is a member of the Social Science Methodology, Statistics and Informatics research program at UL.

She has been actively involved in the EU Kids Online project since 2006 and was a leading researcher in the largest Slovenian project on Internet use by children in Slovenia since 2009. She was involved in the 2015-2017 project on Young children (0-8) and digital technologies funded by JRC. She is also a member of the Management Committee of COST Action The digital literacy and multimodal practices of young children (DigiLitEY). She is currently actively involved in the JRC KiDiCoTi project, a new study focusing on children's digital lives during COVID-19 lockdown. Dr. Lobe is a member of the editorial board of International Journal of Multiple Research Approaches.
