Your hard-to-collect qualitative data becomes valuable only when you know how to analyze it. Yet, not all data analysis methods are equally good and suitable for all. This course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills essential for adeptly working with qualitative data, including interview or focus group transcripts, documents, media and social media data, observation notes, and more. Its approach is comprehensive and practical, specifically targeting four pivotal challenges that, if overlooked, could undermine confidence in qualitative research:
- Collecting and analyzing data without sufficient consideration of the research context.
- Coding collected data without succumbing to data overload or overly rigid application of theoretical frameworks.
- Ensuring the quality of conclusions drawn from the data.
- Securing clear and comprehensive documentation and reporting.
Through interactive lectures, assignments, group activities, and practical exercises using sample data in NVivo (and other QDA software), the course not only identifies these challenges but also offers practical solutions. It begins with participants distinguishing between key qualitative approaches and aligning their research projects accordingly. Subsequently, it explores coding qualitative data and deriving quality conclusions, enabling participants to apply techniques from two widely used data analytic methods: thematic analysis and qualitative content analysis. Lastly, it covers a range of documentation methods and addresses best practices for transparent and effective methodological reporting.
By adopting this problem-solution approach, participants not only grasp fundamental concepts but also develop the ability for reflective design and execution of their own data work.
