Study programme Bachelor's Economics and Business Economics year 3

In the third year you will follow courses of your chosen specialisation along with other general courses about academic skills, like research methods, presenting and academic writing. During this year you can also choose four elective courses, so there is more room for own interests. It is also possible to do an internship instead of a course.

The third year will conclude with a bachelor’s thesis. You will write your thesis (an elaborate paper) about a relevant subject you like. You may want to write about a theme related to your desired specialisation.

The third year is focused on specific development of the further integration and application of knowledge and skills in courses within the International Economics and Policy.

The student can partly choose the content of the programme using electives, their use of the free time in their schedule, and the selection of a topic for the Bachelor’s thesis.

The third year consists largely of a study at a partner university abroad. Students decide which university they will attend with guidance from our staff about the appropriate types of courses and how these align with the students’ preferences for their subsequent Master's programme. The International Economics and Business Bachelor's programme is perfectly aligned with the International Economics and Business Master's specialisation, but a core feature of the Bachelor's programme is that it provides access to a wider range of Master's specialisation tracks. In this regard, several combinations of electives have been selected that provide students with the best possible preparation for various Master's specialisation tracks in Nijmegen. By choosing the most appropriate courses during the semester abroad and selecting the most appropriate electives after returning to Nijmegen, students are able to prepare themselves very effectively for the Master's specialisation tracks of their choice.

The second semester in Nijmegen consists of a number of elective courses. Topics in International Economics and Policy, Topics in Financial Economics or Topics in Business Economics courses prepare you for writing your Bachelor's thesis and link to the Master's programmes of your choice. The major focus during these courses is to teach you how to assume a critical stance during academic debates on current issues in the chosen field of study. Students aspiring to take the Master's programme in International Business Administration should take the Strategy course, whereas the course Interorganisational Networks is well suited for students interested in the interplay between economics and business. When choosing between the courses Behavioural Economics, Behavioural Finance, Marketing, Organisation and Environment, Financial Accounting and Reporting or Economic Policy and Public Finance, students are advised to consider the compatibility with their preferred subsequent Master's programme.
