Dr C. Essers (Caroline)

Dr. Caroline Essers is an Associate Professor Entrepreneurship and Leadership at the department of Business Administration at Nijmegen School of Management (RU University). She is a research affiliate at the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE) @ VU, and a visiting scholar at the Birmingham Business School.

Her main research interests concern the identity constructions of entrepreneurs, and how they develop (identity) strategies in relation to their most important stakeholders in order to be successful. In this respect, she particularly focused on (female) migrant entrepreneurs. Her research contributes to the entrepreneurship literature, studies concerning gender and identity work within organizations and intersectionality studies. New research projects concern the relationship between so-called opportunity structures and migrant entrepreneurs’ agency in Germany, the UK and The Netherlands (an international comparative study), in which she closely cooperates with colleagues from Human Geography at Radboud University, as well as colleagues from the University of Birmingham and the University of Bonn. Another important stream she is currently working on, together with international colleagues, is Critical Entrepreneurship Studies. Forthcoming, hence, is the book 'Critical Perspectives on Entrepreneurship', which will be published by Routledge.
