Professor Marcel van Gerven is head of the Artificial Intelligence department at the Faculty of Social Sciences. He holds a chair in Artificial Cognitive Systems. His research focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms of cognition. To this end, he studies empirically how the brain operates in naturalistic conditions and uses neural networks to model human brain function. From an applied perspective, he develops new neural network architectures to create intelligent machines that outperform humans on cognitively challenging tasks. He is a Vidi laureate and recipient of several grants.

About
Marcel van Gerven focuses on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that is inspired by the way in which the human brain works. This provides the basis for smarter and more efficient brain-based technology.
