Saskia Glas' PhD project is funded by the NWO (talent grant) and focuses on women's rights in the Arab Middle East and North Africa.

Contemporary public debates imply that citizens of all Arab countries denounce all facets of equality between men and women. An explanation is often found in (simplistic understandings of) Islam.

But is Arab citizens' religiosity really invariably tied to opposition to gender equality in all its forms? And does that hold for all aspects of religiosity, from frequenting mosques to spiritual feelings? And does that occur exactly the same throughout the Arab region, from Tunisia to Saudi Arabia?

Saskia Glas' PhD project answers all these questions by studying relations between religiosity and support for gender equality in a nuanced and thorough manner, using multidisciplinary insights and large-scale survey data.
