The research group of Frans Harren focuses on the reliable sensing of minute quantities of trace gases in complicated gas mixtures. His group specializes in the development and application of trace gas detection methods using lasers and mass spectrometers. The laser spectroscopic methods include photoacoustic spectroscopy, frequency modulation spectroscopy, cavity enhanced spectroscopy and Dual Frequency Comb-Fourier Transform Spectroscopy. Next to this, Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry is used to detect larger Volatile Organic compounds in the atmosphere. Thereby, the focus is state-of-the-art detection of gases and volatiles at sub-part per billion (volume) concentrations, non-invasive, with high selectivity and in real-time.
Currently, most promising laser based methods are used with highly advanced mid-IR laser sources, such as the Optical Parametric Oscillators and Quantum Cascade Lasers, supercontinuum sources and Mid-Infrared Frequency Combs. By exploiting the latest solid-state laser and optical fiber technology, the capabilities of existing systems are considerably extended. The laser-based analytical instruments operate in the 1.5-10 m wavelength range with maximum coverage of the molecular fingerprint region and superior wavelength agility. This enables rapid and accurate medical examination of human breath, as well as from plants/fruit/insects and identification/inventorisation of environmental sensitive gas emission sources.
