Syntax refers to the structure and form of language and semantics to word meanings. Prof. Helen de Hoop studies the relationship between the two. How do people say what they want to say and in which way do they choose to do so? By comparing languages, researchers gain some understanding as to what is universal and how far variation in languages can go. The linguistic system should be logical on the one hand and economical on the other. Languages differ in terms of how they achieve a balance between these two requirements, in which it is crucial that language users remain able to understand each other.
