Every plant needs water, but too little or too much water can cause problems for the plant. Prof. Hans de Kroon's group studies the adaptations that plants have developed in order to cope with water problems such as floods or droughts. The group also studies how these adaptations determine plant growth in our natural areas (e.g. along large rivers where floods and droughts alternate) and how they can be used to improve agriculture in very wet or very dry areas. In addition, De Kroon is involved in the preservation of natural plant populations in the fragmented Dutch landscape.

About
Hans de Kroon wants to understand how changes occur in the biodiversity of plant, bird and insect species. The global insect decline is an important issue for him. In collaboration with a variety of partners, he also develops programmes that aim to restore our biodiversity.
