Klaas Landsman is a Professor of Mathematics. He is interested in all aspects of that discipline that in some way relate to quantum theory, and especially in modern analysis and non-commutative geometry. His field of research involves the link between quantum mechanics of Bohr, Heisenberg and Schrödinger and the classical physics of Newton, Maxwell and Einstein, from both mathematical and conceptual perspectives. For example, he would like to know whether the 'big bang' could also have taken place in a quantum mechanical manner. The question of the possible determinism of physical laws should be addressed separately in the classical and quantum mechanics.

Landsman is the author of a non-specialist book entitled Requiem voor Newton (Contact, 2005). In 2006, he gave the first Universum Lecture, an initiative of the Platform Bèta Techniek, which has been commissioned by the Ministry of Education to ensure sufficient availability of people who have a background in scientific or technical education.
