Dr D.B.G.W. Lyna (Dries)

Dr. Dries Lyna (1983) studied History at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), where he graduated in 2005 on a thesis on demographic and economic transitions in the province of Limburg during the first half of the nineteenth century. Afterwards he started working as a Research Assistant of the Fund for Scientific Research Flanders (FWO) at the Centre for Urban History (University of Antwerp). During the Fall of 2009 he spent a semester at Duke University (North Carolina) as a Visiting Research Scholar and in the Spring of 2010 he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation ‘The Cultural Construction of Value. Art Auctions in Antwerp and Brussels, 1700-1794’.

In 2010 he was awarded a postdoctoral grant from FWO-Flanders for his research project Constructing the Canon? Selection and Assessment Procedures at the Academies of Fine Arts in Antwerp and The Hague, 1650-1750. In the Fall of 2012 he spent four months as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Duke University (Durham, North Carolina) and the Getty Research Institute (Los Angeles, California). He has been a guest lecturer at the History Departments of the University of Antwerp (2006-2012) and the Free University of Brussels (2011-2012), as well as at the Institut d'Etudes Supérieures des Arts in Paris (2006-2012).

At the end of 2016 Dries Lyna and Jan Kok received the news that the Vrije Competitie-proposal they co-wrote with dr. Alicia Schrikker (Leiden University) would receive funding from NWO. Dries is doing research within the group project Colonialism Inside Out: Everyday Experience and Plural Practice in Dutch Institutions in Sri Lanka (c. 1700-1800). In his subproject Dries focuses on the social function of Dutch colonial law courts in eighteenth century Ceylon.
