Professor Marit Monteiro conducts research into the history of Catholicism and the Catholic culture in the Netherlands.

Separate research projects focus on the relationship between religion, culture and the collective identity, in an international comparative perspective. This historical research into the meaning of religion, whether or not institutionalized, forms an essential contribution to the current debate concerning multiculturalism and the Christian character of the Netherlands and Europe.
