Dorian Schaap conducts social scientific research on, among other things, trust in the police and the police system. More generally, he is interested in the relationship between the police, the state, and citizens, as well as international comparative and mixed methods research.
His PhD dissertation, titled ‘The Police, the Public, and the Pursuit of Trust. A Cross-National, Dynamic Study of Trust in the Police and Police Trust-Building Strategies’, published by Eleven International Publishing, will be defended on May 16th, 2018. The book deals with citizens’ trust in the police as well as police trust-building strategies. It includes analyses of levels of and developments in trust in the police in different countries, of cross-national comparability of survey data, and of explanations for differences between countries in terms of trust. Moreover, the author studied the various strategies that police organizations in England & Wales, Denmark, and the Netherlands have applied over the past decades to gain citizens’ trust.
