The purpose of this interactive workshop is to raise awareness that different cultures have their own practices and expectations (unwritten rules), which can result in challenges that may hamper interaction and internationalisation in the classroom. This workshop aims to build students’ awareness and to give them tools to interact with their peers and teacher to establish a positive, inclusive and productive learning environment.
Who is the workshop for?
For teachers and students.
We will cover the following:
- Building awareness of the impact cultural diversity can have on group work
- Discussing challenges/issues that can arise in international environments (such as the classroom)
- Creating personal cultural maps to become conscious of your own cultural characteristics and the contrasts/similarities with those of others
- Sharing tips on how to be culturally sensitive to help prevent and resolve misunderstanding and conflict
- Understanding how academic cultures can differ
- Making internationals feel more included by using a common language
- Facilitating students to work inclusively in their project groups (for teachers)
- Finding a balance between cultural ‘pampering’ and classroom ‘strictness’ (for teachers)
