Nature reserves such as the Ooijpolder have something paradoxical about them. In some parts, the number of insects is declining rapidly, whereas other areas have an abundance of thriving plant species. "Why does an area look the way it does?" wonders Professor of Ecology Hans de Kroon. He hopes to find an answer through his Living Lab project. Which elements in areas such as the Ooij - where nature and agriculture converge - can contribute to biodiversity? Is it the puddles or flowery dikes?
Farmers play an active role within Living Lab. By talking to them, De Kroon hopes that in time nature-inclusive agriculture will become possible, where farmers also earn a good living.
