The visual world around us is complex and usually consists of elements that occlude parts of themselves and other objects. The bottom-up visual input into our brains is therefore incomplete and fragmented. However, in our brains the incomplete, fragmented elements are interpreted and filled-in to yield a coherent and consistent image of the outside world, a phenomenon that has been referred to as amodal completion.
During my PhD I will investigate how the brain manages this under-explored, extraordinary feat of amodal completion, and to what extent amodal completion resembles the processing which underlies visual imagery.
