Study programme Comparative European History year 3
In the third year, theory and practice are combined and you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills to find solutions to social issues of topical relevance. On the one hand, there will be room for further academic specialisation via another thematic seminar and the bachelor thesis. On the other hand, you are able to convert your knowledge into practice via the minor programme. We offer a variety of minors with a societal theme, varying from gender and diversity to multilingualism. Choosing one of these themes will help you put focus in your programme, making it easier to set yourself apart from others when entering the labour market.
About this study curriculum
Minor structure
You will take courses on your chosen theme and participate in a think tank with the aim of finding a solution to a problem within that theme. This will be done on behalf of a company or an institution, along with students from other degree programmes. Many of our students see this practical assignment as an excellent advantage on the labour market. An individual internship is also possible in some cases.
Contributing to a better society
The themes of our minors were inspired by the National Research Agenda, which addresses scientific questions posed to the scientific community by the general Dutch public. As part of your minor, you will focus on answering one of these questions. In the process, you will also learn how to approach an issue from different perspectives. This will help you develop a nuanced opinion and work on sustainable solutions, which is exactly what our society needs.
Studying abroad
Nijmegen is a great place to study, but you may also want to head out and see if you have international ambitions. Instead of taking a minor on a societal theme, you can choose to study abroad. The degree programme has excellent contacts with universities around the world and can help you find a suitable position.
There's more to the third year
While the minor takes up a large part of your third year, it's not the only thing you'll focus on. You will also take major courses as part of your degree programme and write a Bachelor's thesis on a topic or research study you will develop and carry out independently.
