Ecology

The department Ecology (part of Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences) comprises a team of ecologists dedicated to preserve and pursue ecosystem health. Our group unites aquatic and terrestrial ecologists focussing on plants, animals, microorganisms and their interactions in a changing world.

Rising sea levels spell danger for shorebirds such as oystercatcher

Research shows that rising sea levels will drastically reduce the number of shorebirds in Europe. The number of oystercatchers will decline an additional 56 to 79 percent over the next 100 years.

Antarctica

Grant for research on Antarctic marine animals

Aquatic ecologist Wilco Verberk of Radboud University has received a grant of nearly 1 million euros from NWO to conduct research in Antarctica. From the money, he will investigate the influence of global warming on marine animals in Antarctica.

Researchers map aquatic-based, human-driven impacts on climate change

A study published in the journal Science illustrates how human impacts to aquatic ecosystems are contributing to the global climate crisis. One of the study's takeaways is that humans are impacting decomposition rates in rivers on a global scale.

Research

We aim to deliver strategies that reverse biodiversity decline and restore key ecosystem functions, including biogeochemical cycling. This requires a dual approach. We conduct basic research into the functioning and adaptation of species, communities and ecosystems. In our applied research we develop restoration and management strategies for which innovative methods and technologies are developed.

Internships

Would you like to do your internship at the Ecology department? We have numerous contacts abroad, for example in Scandinavia and South America. Please get in touch for more information with the project leader corresponding to your topic of preference. A few examples of relevant subjects are:

  • Plant functional diversity and its role on peatland functioning

The research department offers various Bachelor's and Master's courses and is closely involved in the Bachelor'sBiology and the Master's specialisation Conservation and Restoration Ecology. Bjorn Robroek is the coordinator of the Bachelor’s learning trajectory Ecology; Annelies Veraart is the coordinator of the Master’s specialisation Conservation and Restoration Ecology. 

Projects

Carbon Connects

Carbon Connects is an Interreg North-West Europe initiative with a primary focus on peatland restoration. Originally slated for a four-year period commencing in 2018, the project's timeline has now been extended to December 2023.

Towards smart soil-sensing: developing a proxy for soil health

Rosa Boone is studying how the restoration of soil diversity contributes to the condition of soil. To do this, she's developing a new measuring method that farmers can use to track the health of the soil beneath their feet.
